New Orleans, LA --The Men's and Women's Track and Field team competed in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship Track and Field meet on Saturday, April 22, 2017.  This was the first time in several years that Philander Smith College participated.  Zora Talbert was the lone Panther to score for Philander Smith College placing 5th in the Women's 800 meters behind a talented field of nationally ranked runners.  Talbert also ran the 200 and 400 meters for the Lady Panthers. Alona Word gave great effort in the Women's 1500 meters but was not able to score.

On the Men's side, Chris Journet participated in the Men's 200 and 400 Meters placing 3rd in both heats. Miquan Martin also participated for the men in the 200 and 400 meters. Although Martin and Journet did not make the finals, the men represented the program well.

Acting Head Coach Chris McConnell is optimistic about the team's future, but ultimately hangs his hat on the team's work ethic as the key to their continued success.

"We're going to train all summer, and we're going to train rigorously. Next year, I'm very confident that Philander Smith is going to be a force not just in track and field, but in all sports."
