Philander Smith College Edges Central Baptist in Thrilling Season Opener

Little Rock, Ark. — October 23, 2025 — In an electrifying start to the 2025 basketball season, Philander Smith University (PSU) rallied from behind to secure a hard-fought 81–74 victory over Central Baptist College (CBC) at Reddin Fieldhouse. A spirited crowd of 326 fans packed the arena, witnessing a competitive matchup that delivered excitement from start to finish.

CBC came out aggressive early, taking control and entering halftime with a slim 38–36 lead behind the efforts of standout guard Jason Hunt. Hunt poured in a game-high 24 points, despite an off night from deep where he hit just three of 14 attempts. Teammate Tyler Johnson added 15 points and helped keep the Mustangs ahead early, though he struggled at the free-throw line, converting only 5-of-10.

Philander Smith responded with intensity in the second half, led by the unstoppable play of Elijah Anderson. The senior guard was the engine for PSU's offense, logging 39 minutes and erupting for 31 points while knocking down 10-of-12 from the foul line. Inside, Raymond Reece emerged as a dominant presence, securing a pivotal double-double with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to give PSC the edge on the glass, 38–34.

Physicality defined the night, as both teams combined for 44 personal fouls in the gritty contest. A technical foul assessed to CBC's Roko Kegalj shifted momentum at a crucial moment, allowing the Panthers to seize control late in the second half.

The most decisive factor proved to be ball security. CBC's 23 turnovers repeatedly opened the door for PSU fast-break opportunities and extra possessions, while the Panthers limited themselves to just 12 giveaways. PSC capitalized, outscoring the Mustangs 45–36 after halftime to complete the comeback.
