Philander Smith Triumphs Over LeMoyne-Owen
Memphis, Tenn. — October 25, 2025 — Philander Smith University opened its 2025 women's basketball campaign with an impressive 59–50 road victory over LeMoyne-Owen College at Bruce Hall/Johnson Gymnasium. The Panthers controlled the tempo early and weathered a late surge from the Magicians to secure their first win of the season.
PSU wasted no time establishing momentum, taking a 14–10 lead after the first quarter behind efficient offensive execution and tight perimeter defense. The second quarter further showcased the Panthers' control, as they limited LeMoyne-Owen to just five points while extending their lead to 23–15 at halftime.
The Magicians mounted their strongest push in the third quarter, erupting for 19 points and applying full-court pressure to challenge PSC's ball movement. However, the Panthers held their composure, responding with 20 points of their own to maintain separation heading into the final quarter. Both teams delivered solid scoring in the fourth, each posting 16 points, but Philander Smith's steady performance sealed the nine-point victory.
Star guard Miracle Thomas led the Panthers with a dominant two-way performance. Logging 36 minutes, Thomas tallied a game-high 25 points while shooting 8-of-18 from the floor and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. She added eight rebounds and three steals, proving instrumental on both ends of the court.
Supporting the scoring effort was Samya Johnson, who contributed 13 points and made the most of her trips to the free-throw line, converting 6-of-8 attempts. Her ability to draw contact and finish key possessions helped PSC maintain its lead when LeMoyne-Owen threatened late.
For the Magicians, Marley Freeman led the charge with 14 points and a strong showing at the line (8-of-10). Though LeMoyne-Owen knocked down 50% of their three-pointers, their struggles inside the arc and at the stripe (50% team free-throw shooting) ultimately limited their comeback attempt.
