In a dramatic early morning showdown on October 11th, the Philander Smith College women's volleyball team pulled off a remarkable comeback to defeat Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) in five sets at Mims Gym in Little Rock. The Panthers prevailed 3–2 (21–25, 19–25, 25–12, 25–14, 15–9) after rallying from a two-set deficit, thrilling the 182 fans in attendance.
SUNO came out firing, seizing control of the first two sets with crisp passing and aggressive net play. Taszia Adkinson powered the Knights' attack, tallying 16 kills and anchoring the defense with 20 digs. Setter Trinity Bloodworth orchestrated the offense with 21 assists and added 9 digs, keeping the Panthers on their heels through much of the early action.
But Philander Smith refused to fold. Led by the dominant play of JaNiya Sanders, who notched 17 kills and 7 digs, the Panthers stormed back in the third and fourth sets. Antonisha Whitney was equally impressive, registering 11 kills on just 20 swings for a blistering .550 hitting percentage, helping her team dominate at the net.
The statistical story told the same tale of momentum shift. Philander Smith finished with a team hitting percentage of .220, nearly doubling SUNO's .120 mark. The Panthers also imposed their will defensively, compiling 12 team blocks compared to SUNO's 2 — a difference that ultimately swung the match.
