PANTHERS SWEPT BY EAGLES AT HOME
GAME ONE (Eagles 20 - Panthers 3)
The Philander Smith Panthers were swept in a doubleheader by the Williams Baptist Eagles 20-3 and 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Lamar Porter Field in Little Rock. The Panthers were victims of a seven-run third inning, highlighted by a leadoff solo home run by the Eagles' Will Rogers that broke a 0-0 tie and began the onslaught in game one.
The Panthers' defense was stout in the early going, supporting the starting pitcher Brett Marcel early on, as he surrendered one hit and stranded two runners who advanced on walks with stellar defensive play by Centerfielder Addison Brown and Shortstop Bradley Brown, along with Third Baseman Elliot Sheppard and Leftfielder Chandler Morrow in the opening frame. The Panthers did even better in the second as Marcel retired the side with two strikeouts and a groundout to end the top of the inning. However, that would not hold up in the decisive third when the Eagles batted through the lineup, collecting five hits and drawing a series of walks to take command of the game.
GAME TWO (Eagles 5 - Panthers 3)
In the second game of the series, the Panthers fought valiantly, rallying from an early 4-0 deficit behind an Elliot Sheppard home run to open the bottom half of the first inning, followed by a Sheppard RBI double in the bottom of the third, scoring teammate Roger Miner, Jr. from second that was aided by a throwing error, to close the gap to 4-2.
The Eagles' Skylar Morrison homered to center field at the top of the sixth inning to widen the margin to 5-2. Still, the Panthers responded at the bottom of the frame when Owen Branch followed suit with a homer of his own in the same location to end the scoring for both squads.
Offensively, the Panthers showed promise as Sheppard collected three hits, scored a run, and was responsible for four RBI, followed by Addison Brown with two hits and one RBI, Miner with one hit, one run, and one RBI, and Branch with his solo home run. First baseman and designated hitter Noah Siedenschwarz started finding a groove in his plate appearances, going three-for-six for the day.
